TikTok hit with a €530 million fine after illegally sending users’ data to China.

TikTok has to pay €530 million in penalties because it sent Europeans' personal data to China illegally and wasn’t transparent enough with users.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said TikTok breached the EU’s flagship data protection rules because it couldn’t guarantee the data was protected under China’s surveillance laws.

"OpenAI announced today that users will soon be able to buy products through ChatGPT. The rollout of shopping buttons for AI-powered search queries will come to everyone, whether they are a signed-in user or not. Shoppers will not be able to check out inside of ChatGPT; instead they will be redirected to the merchant’s website to finish the transaction.

In a prelaunch demo for WIRED, Adam Fry, the ChatGPT search product lead at OpenAI, demonstrated how the updated user experience could be used to help people using the tool for product research decide which espresso machine or office chair to buy. The product recommendations shown to prospective shoppers are based on what ChatGPT remembers about a user’s preferences as well as product reviews pulled from across the web."

🏫 Digital Sovereignty in Education

Gymnasium Dachsberg proves that privacy in schools is achievable! Since switching from Google to @mailbox_org in 2023, 900 students & 100 teachers communicate GDPR-compliantly on German servers. This move shows: Digital self-determination is not a vision of the future, but a necessity!

"Amidst the chaos and upheaval at the Social Security Administration (SSA) caused by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), employees have now been asked to integrate the use of a generative AI chatbot into their daily work.

But before any of them can use it, they all need to watch a four-minute training video featuring an animated, four-fingered woman crudely drawn in a style that would not look out of place on websites created in the early part of this century.

Aside from the Web 1.0-era graphics employed, the video also fails at its primary purpose of informing SSA staff about one of the most important aspects of using the chatbot: Do not use any personally identifiable information (PII) when using the assistant."

"In the wake of the pandemic, schools in the European Union have increasingly begun to implement digital services for online learning. While these modernisation efforts are a welcome development, a small number of big tech companies immediately tried to dominate the space – often with the intention of getting children used to their systems and creating a new generation of future “loyal” customers. One of them is Microsoft, whose 365 Education services violate children’s data protection rights. When pupils wanted to exercise their GDPR rights, Microsoft said schools were the “controller” for their data. However, the schools have no control over the systems."

"Until now, Meta's AI technology has not been trained with the Facebook and Instagram data of European users. This is now set to change: From the end of May 2025, Meta wants to use the data of all adult European Facebook and Instagram users for training of its own AI applications. The data will then be used to train the company's AI-based services such as the Meta-AI chatbot on WhatsApp or language models such as Llama.

Start of training planned for 2024 postponed for the time being
Meta had already announced last year that it would use all public posts and photos from its European Facebook and Instagram users for AI training. However, Meta then postponed the project after the Irish Data Protection Authority (IDPC), which is the lead supervisory authority for Meta in the EU, approached the company with data protection issues, particularly regarding the legal basis and transparency. The procedure that is now in place makes it easier to object to Meta's use of personal data for AI training."
