Generally speaking*, avoid standing behind things.
Desks, computers, lecterns, we want to connect with audiences and having a literal barrier between you and them hampers that connection.

Saddest #academic day in the year: I started working again after 8 months of payed leisure.
The "work" is teaching and the "payed leisure" is research. I don't like teaching (no shame) as it introduces a stressful performance dimension to almost every day, for the next 4 months (all 120 teaching hours in this semester).
Occasionally I can do it well (last year I got an unprecedented 100% satisfaction rate by about 100 students in 2 courses) but it's tiring. Help! #academia #science
@StephenCurry Perhaps #RoyalSociety @S4F @ScientistRebellion @academicchatter @academicsunite could bringt some people for this important #petition

#Academic #freedom? Not with the #newspeak list of words that could risk a #grant to be pulled in the USA.
My whole museum work would be forbidden: #culturalHeritage. And don't write about the Great Barrier Reef, the diversity of bacteria, excluded test arrangements, or female bears. A thread with the risky words: https://mastodon.online/@Lazarou@mastodon.social/113943275723212485
A successful programme to dumb down a whole country.

Academic Publishing is Scum (no news I know but need to vent) Spent an hour with a chatbot that claimed to be human who finally admitted, after saying we cheked the open access option on a www form, that the $4k charge for an open access publication was in fact the only option offered - so it was prechecked for us. Here is a LibGuide I made about AI Tools and their use in academia.
Content includes links to different AI tools, help for citing AI in research papers, a glossary of terms and some discussion about academic issues of the use of AI.

New paper out: Claudia Favarato (@unibayreuth) discusses the insights that African political philosophies can offer for studying the political sphere in digital contexts. She argues that its relational approach provides valuable insight into #digital political onto-relationalities, revealing #power within in-between spaces and illuminating their dynamics.

An example of frustrating #citations in #academic works on #history: J. Martin (2000) is often cited by #sociolinguists and #sociologists working on #Louisiana and #Creoles. At one point, she discussed the tignon law, (unclearly) citing Roussève (1937), but Roussève cited G. King (1895) who herself cited the ordinance directly. It's like the telephone whisper game, hoping that the info stays intact.
"Being an #open #academic means more than publishing papers. In my case, it's being on the farm. It’s listening to different people inside and outside #academia and thinking together on how farm business models can be more regenerative. It's involving farmers in the #research process by listening to their experiences."
Have you already listened to our #OpenScience bites #podcast episode with PhD student Stefano Bertorini?
I might as well do another #introduction specifically for the #academic side of this here fediverse:
Coming from #theoreticalCS (with applications in #NLP) to doing #digitalhumanities (computational #musicology), I've now landed in #ResponsibleAI. Specifically, I'm interested in exploring #AntiCapitalistAI, both sharpening existing critiques of current AI practise by confronting capital and exploring inherent politics of technologies, and finding better ones for a socialist world.
_“While parchment recycling was common in Iceland both in the medieval and early modern period, it was most productive in the century following the introduction of the Icelandic Reformation when palimpsested parchment from Latin Catholic books was frequently used for religious and legal manuscripts as a cheaper and more readily available alternative to paper. ”_

#Academic #libraries are essential for advancing #OpenScience.
However, institutional #communication about open science support is often shaped by #policy objectives rather than the needs of academics.
In our article for @obibJournal we describe how libraries can foster open science by implementing adaptive, researcher-centred communication strategies.

Based on 20 years doing just this, I offer tactics and suggestions for rethinking and navigating anthropological careers—beyond the tired, unhelpful debates of #academic vs. #appliedAnthropology.
