We cannot ignore #Facebook's ongoing assault against publishers.

Just two days before the local #elections in #Leicestershire, our Facebook account was 'permanently suspended,' effectively banning us from the platform.

As a result, we will rely less on these platforms and seek more ethical ways to reach our audience, like our weekly newsletter and the #fediverse.

Leicester Gazette · Leicester Gazette hit with Facebook account ban ahead of electionIt has since been reinstated, but what does this saga mean for the future of the Gazette?

Extremely chilling text! If you are in the US you absolutely have to read the whole thing, if you are not you should, too. 👇🏼

The odds that we can vote our way out of this in four years seems implausible as well. In competitive autocracies (like ours is becoming), #elections are used as a popular anesthetic. If you give people the false hope that they can change things at the ballot box, they won’t rise up. They live in a perpetual state of hoping “maybe next time.” The #GOP learned this from #Hungary, where #Orban’s Fidez party continually employs this trick. So do the autocratic regimes in Venezuela, Belarus, and elsewhere: #Election wins are rigged, but seem just close enough to keep people from revolting.
[...]
Very rarely has a country that has descended this far into
#autocracy recovered without outside intervention (like, say, the combined allied armies fighting all the way to your capitol). Most warning signs of impending #genocide are here. I know I’m a pessimist. But, as Jewish producer Billy Wilder once said in 1945, “The optimists all died in the gas chambers. The pessimists have pools in Beverly Hills.” This brutal observation reveals a truth: when it comes to the threat of genocide, listen to the intellectuals … and the pessimists.

Election battle on Chinese social media apps intensifies
By Fiona Willan

The federal election campaign battle on Chinese social media platforms has intensified, with a surge in candidates seeking to win over Chinese-Australian voters.

This is the section I quoted of the FT article that I believe is relevant and rises to foreign interference:

“The FT’s analysis, in collaboration with a team of researchers at the University of Southern California led by Luca Luceri, identified a network of suspicious accounts promoting rightwing memes and news sources collected from posts appearing for the queries: #cdnpoli, Canada, Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre.
The accounts have tell-tale signs of being bots: posting at very high volume and frequency, often only retweeting content, and consistently sharing a variety of common links — in this case promoting Poilievre and attacking Carney. Often the accounts push misleading content, such as associating Carney with the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Luceri said: “Our approach is deliberately cautious to reduce misclassification and minimise false positives — ensuring that organic accounts are not misclassified as malicious actors.””

Here is the definition of Foreign Interference in the Act. It seems pretty clear to me that it applies.

“Foreign interference in the Canadian electoral process can pose a serious threat to our democracy. All allegations of
wrongdoing on the part of a foreign person or entity are taken seriously and are carefully examined to determine
whether they fall within the Commissioner's mandate.

• Undue influence by foreigners

**** Foreign persons or entities are prohibited from unduly influencing a Canadian elector to vote or refrain from voting, or to vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate or registered party. *****

Examples of undue influence may include an individual who does not reside in Canada who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident knowingly incurring expenses that directly promote or oppose:
• a candidate in an election;
• a registered party that has endorsed a candidate in that election; or
• the leader of such a registered party.

It may also include attempts to influence the elector that involve committing an act or omission that is contrary to federal or provincial laws and regulations.”

Entities on X are attempting to manipulate Canadians to vote for one party in the Canadian election.

I have submitted a report to the Commissioner of Canada Elections. Any Canadian can. I encourage you to do the same.

This is the reporting website:
cef-cce.ca/content.asp?section

Based on the reporting from FT today of right wing influence campaigns on X, I believe there is an attempt by foreign actors — possibly indirectly or directly connected to the Trump Administration — to manipulate the Canadian electorate.

Everything that happens on X is enabled by one person, Elon Musk, who occupies a key role in the Administration of the United States of America.
