I'm so sorry." </p><p>"Thanks Raf, I'm OK." </p><p>"Penn, I'm having a few folx around to my place this evening. I think you'd like them. I'll send a driver to pick you up. Our Corporate UNattaching Teams will be in touch soon with next steps."</p><p>She sighed, more resignation than shame.</p><p>--- </p><p>It started before the decimation of science in '25. Academic publishing had corporatised long before that; journals were a cash cow built on free labour - from writers and editors. </p><p>When the Institutes lost funding in '25, universities were forced to rely on their endowments. The Ivy Leagues survived a few years - but by the early 30s, when Trump was in his third term, they too were broke. </p><p>And the Journal-AI Conglomerates stepped in.</p><p>Wiley-Taylor-Francis-Anthropic, Elsevier-Springer-Gemini, SAGE-OpenAI. </p><p>The journals had each merged with key generative AI companies in the late 20s. The prevalence of AI slop and the Token Crisis meant that there no more human-created tokens to feed the LLMs ... except those in paywalled journals. </p><p>The AI companies got their tokens, and the journals got their token lucre. It was a match made in hell. </p><p>This was all by design, of course. </p><p>---</p><p>"So, tell me how your new h-index v2 works, and how my h-index v2 means that I don't meet my KPIs?" </p><p>"Ah, Professor, we've changed our ranking algorithm, and it no longer weights the h-index v2 as heavily. It's much more focused on how many words are written and published."</p><p>"So you can harvest them for tokens?"</p><p>Her interlocuter cleared his throat. Students who were asked to write a history paper or literary analysis could have the tool do it in mere seconds. Some schools banned it while others deployed A.I. detection services, despite concerns about their accuracy.</p><p>But, oh, how the tables have turned. Now students are complaining on sites like Rate My Professors about their instructors’ overreliance on A.I. and scrutinizing course materials for words ChatGPT tends to overuse, like “crucial” and “delve.” In addition to calling out hypocrisy, they make a financial argument: They are paying, often quite a lot, to be taught by humans, not an algorithm that they, too, could consult for free.</p><p>For their part, professors said they used A.I. chatbots as a tool to provide a better education. Instructors interviewed by The New York Times said chatbots saved time, helped them with overwhelming workloads and served as automated teaching assistants.</p><p>Their numbers are growing. In a national survey of more than 1,800 higher-education instructors last year, 18 percent described themselves as frequent users of generative A.I. tools; in a repeat survey this year, that percentage nearly doubled, according to Tyton Partners, the consulting group that conducted the research. Since the arrival of generative AI, I have spent much of the last two years talking with professors and students to try to understand what is going on in their classrooms. In those conversations, faculty have been variously vexed, curious, angry, or excited about AI, but as last year was winding down, for the first time one of the frequently expressed emotions was sadness. This came from faculty who were, by their account, adopting the strategies my colleagues and I have recommended: emphasizing the connection between effort and learning, responding to AI-generated work by offering a second chance rather than simply grading down, and so on. Those faculty were telling us our recommended strategies were not working as well as we’d hoped, and they were saying it with real distress.</p><p>Earlier this semester, an NYU professor told me how he had AI-proofed his assignments, only to have the students complain that the work was too hard. When he told them those were standard assignments, just worded so current AI would fail to answer them, they said he was interfering with their “learning styles.” A student asked for an extension, on the grounds that ChatGPT was down the day the assignment was due. Another said, about work on a problem set, “You’re asking me to go from point A to point B, why wouldn’t I use a car to get there?” And another, when asked about their largely AI-written work, replied, “Everyone is doing it.” Those are stories from a 15-minute conversation with a single professor.</p><p>We are also hearing a growing sense of sadness from our students about AI use. Sometimes there’s a smoothness to the language, a flattened syntax; other times, it’s clumsy and mechanical. The arguments are too evenhanded — counterpoints tend to be presented just as rigorously as the paper’s central thesis. Words like multifaceted and context pop up more than they might normally. On occasion, the evidence is more obvious, as when last year a teacher reported reading a paper that opened with “As an AI, I have been programmed …” Usually, though, the evidence is more subtle, which makes nailing an AI plagiarist harder than identifying the deed. Some professors have resorted to deploying so-called Trojan horses, sticking strange phrases, in small white text, in between the paragraphs of an essay prompt.<br>(...)<br>Still, while professors may think they are good at detecting AI-generated writing, studies have found they’re actually not. One, published in June 2024, used fake student profiles to slip 100 percent AI-generated work into professors’ grading piles at a U.K. university. The professors failed to flag 97 percent. It doesn’t help that since ChatGPT’s launch, AI’s capacity to write human-sounding essays has only gotten better. Which is why universities have enlisted AI detectors like Turnitin, which uses AI to recognize patterns in AI-generated text. After evaluating a block of text, detectors provide a percentage score that indicates the alleged likelihood it was AI-generated. Students talk about professors who are rumored to have certain thresholds (25 percent, say) above which an essay might be flagged as an honor-code violation. But I couldn’t find a single professor — at large state schools or small private schools, elite or otherwise — who admitted to enforcing such a policy.
