The graph shown below is a bit more technical than the one in my previous post. It illustrates three things:

🟥 First, that global warming in March 2025 was at 1.6°C above the pre-industrial average.

🟥 Second, that average warming over the past 22 months has been 1.61°C, well above the previously hoped for 1.5 limit.

🟥 And third, it also shows that the warming we are currently experiencing should not be as high as it is. Last year’s El Niño has ended, so we *should* have seen global temperatures drop significantly. But they have not.

That's because we are witnessing the total wreckage of Earth’s precious ecosystem. The world you and I were born into is gone forever.

Capitalist commerce and industry, if left unchecked, will ultimately destroy modern civilization, resulting in millions if not billions of human deaths, along with the extinction of countless plant and animal species.

That’s not doomism. It’s reality.

Days of severe #storms leave 18 dead as rising rivers threaten US south and midwest

"As long as I've been alive - and I'm 52 - this is the worst I've ever seen it," said Wendy Quire, the general manager at the Brown Barrel restaurant.

Capitalism Eating Itself by Fueling Climate Mayhem, Warns Capitalist

If humanity stays on current course, warns top insurer, the "financial sector as we know it ceases to function. And with it, capitalism as we know it ceases to be viable."

According to GüntherThallinger, a former top executive at Germany's branch of the consulting giant #McKinsey & Company and currently a board member of #Allianz SE, one of the largest insurance companies in the world, the #ClimateCrisis is on a path to destroy #capitalism as we know it.

"We are fast approaching temperature levels—1.5C, 2C, 3C—where #insurers will no longer be able to offer coverage for many" of the risks associated with the #climate crisis, Thallinger writes in a recent post highlighted Thursday by #TheGuardian.

There is no way to "adapt" to temperatures beyond human tolerance. There is limited adaptation to #megafires, other than not building near #forests. Whole cities built on flood plains cannot simply pick up and move uphill. And as temperatures continue to rise, adaptation itself becomes economically unviable.

Once we reach 3°C of warming, the situation locks in. Atmospheric energy at this level will persist for 100+ years due to carbon cycle inertia and the absence of scalable industrial carbon removal technologies. There is no known pathway to return to pre-2°C conditions. (See: #IPCC AR6, 2023; NASA Earth Observatory: "The Long-Term Warming Commitment")

At that point, risk cannot be transferred (no insurance), risk cannot be absorbed (no public capacity), and risk cannot be adapted to (physical limits exceeded). That means no more mortgages, no new real estate development, no long-term investment, no financial stability. The financial sector as we know it ceases to function. And with it, capitalism as we know it ceases to be viable.

People in the know know what's coming.

🔴 Climate scientists know.

🔴 Top Wall Street financiers know.

🔴 Our "leaders" in business and government know.

Global warming *will* exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial average. Effectively it already has.

Any hope of staying below 2°C also appears to be lost. We are now heading toward a 3° world, if not higher.

Of course we should continue working hard to limit the catastrophic damage as much as possible. But you’re a fool if you’re not beginning at this point to prepare for the worst — because that's what's coming.

@soydelbierzo On a planet with #climateCrisis and #biodiversity loss, we need *all* #seedBanks everywhere.
You can see what happens with #biodiversityloss if only a small region get's a disturbed #ecology system.

Ecology is not a national but a planetary thing. Plus #economy: The USA export food. Poor countries with disturbed farming are dependend on imports. We need more species for the future of *humanity* as a whole.
What happens in the USA roughly concerns the EU, too!

New paper: More tree species ➡️ less heat peaks 🌳🌡️ Below the #forest canopy it is cooler during heat waves and warmer during cold waves than in the surrounding area.

This temperature buffering is all the stronger the more tree species grow in the forest. The new study by researchers from #iDiv, @UniHalle and #UniLeipzig was carried out in the large-scale planted forest experiment #BEFChina.

This graphic from the WMO report is one of the best visuals I have seen that clearly illustrates the connection between increasing greenhouse gas concentrations, rising temperatures, and reinforcing feedback loops that lead to devastating high-impact events with consequent risks to populations around the world.

It's not a pretty picture.
