So, I'm coming from Fortran mostly, moving to C++, and I've this explicitly vectorized Fortran code which runs column wise operations, e.g.:

a = input(:, 1) + input(:, 2)

Now, I'm wondering how to implement this the fastest using Rcpp/C++.

I can use (Rcpp)Armadillo to implement the implicit logic, or loop through vector elements. Since the overhead of flipping between the two is quite some work I would love someone's take up front.

2) Linear algebra
3) Pointer arithmetic

by hand.

If I had a windows machine, I'd have tried to fix this one. But I'm completely at sea for this type of issue without the OS on hand. (don't try developing on a VM or old computer, Inkscape is too big and slow to build on windows for that)

Formatting with argument types checked at compile time and translated at run time works now. All strings need to be UTF encoded.
The last expression doesn't compile because of a subtle error in the plural format string.
The translation engine is backed by 'gettext'.
