#OTD 1803 geboren: #FloraTristan. /1

On this day fourteen years ago, on 6 April 2011, the second radio pulsar discovered with @einsteinathome was published.

Our distributed computing project had started almost exactly two years earlier to analyze data from the Arecibo radio telescope with the help of tens of thousands of volunteers.

This second discovery was special: the pulsar orbits the common center of mass with a white dwarf in just 9.4 hours and it belongs to a rare “species”.

At the time, it was assumed that this pulsar could be used to observe relativistic effects. This was finally achieved in 2022 after many more observations: aanda.org/articles/aa/full_htm

#art #history: imagine being such a gifted author that one of  your most radical & inventive novels was mainly a product of automatic writing? best known, perhaps, for providing the screenplay  that would become alain resnais' 'hiroshima mon amour' - which is not a  bad place to start if you've not yet become acquainted with marguerite duras (born #otd in 1914) - she largely escaped acclaim  outside of france. this is regrettable. #OTD in 1984.

The narrative of George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) begins and causes widespread discussion. G. K. Chesterton's The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904) is also set in this year; and Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 (2009–2010) is set in a parallel version of it.

There has been a theory that 1984 was chosen simply as an inversion of the year 1948, the year in which it was being completed.

#OnThisDay, 3 Apr 1979, Jane Byrne wins the Chicago mayoral election. She is the first woman to be mayor of the city and is sworn in on 16 April. She hires the first black woman to be a school superintendent in the city, and stops the police raiding gay bars.

Lori Lightfoot was the second woman to hold the post, from 2019 to 2023. She’s the first black woman and the first LGBT+ mayor since the post was created in 1837.

“Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation."

#OnThisDay, 31 Mar 1776, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John Adams, who was drafting the Declaration of Independence. He declined her suggestions.
